Product introduction

The ACAMS ATIS solution has been developed in collaboration with end users in order to meet the challenges within ATM today.

Airport control tower operators need to devote their full attention to safely controlling the traffic. In a hectic environment there is no room for errors or time loss due to unnecessary complexity. At the same time, there is often a need to improve operational efficiency and meet the appointed budget. This creates the need to have perfectly adapted system solutions while balancing the need for cost efficiency. It would seem a difficult task to create a solution that is easy to operate, perfectly adapted to any airport and at the same time cost-efficient.

However, this is precisely what ACAMS ATIS provides by having a:

  • User-friendly human machine interface (HMI)
  • Modular and cost-efficient design
  • Seamless integration and interoperability with other systems

Functional description

The ATIS system allows the user to easily generate ATIS messages containing the required current routine information to the aircraft.

ACAMS ATIS has an intuitive human machine interface, providing current routine information to arriving and departing aircraft. ATIS messages are generated in both voice format and digital data formats.

The latest text-to-speech (TTS) conversion technology available is used to provide natural and authentic-sounding voice for radio-transmitted ATIS broadcast.

The system can receive data input from meteorological reports such as MET REPORT/SPECIAL, METAR/SPECI, AERODOME WARNING and WIND SHEAR WARNING compliant with ICAO Annex 3.

Runway Condition Reports and SNOWTAM are also supported if compliant with ICAO Annex 15. Appropriate runway information can be fed to the ATIS system if the information is available on other systems, or via manual input.

The system may output D-ATIS messages on interfaces such as AFTN/AMHS or directly to datalink service providers via the ACAMS Datalink Message Broker service.

The ATIS system encompasses the following key features:

  • Information Collection: It gathers current operational and meteorological data from digital interfaces, as well as inputs from operators ATIS workstation HMI
  • Information Processing: It processes the collected data, human input and data validation and generates ATIS message content in both Voice-ATIS and D-ATIS formats in compliance with ICAO Annex 11
  • Message Output: It outputs the ATIS message in voice format to radio and the D-ATIS message to relevant digital interfaces
  • 3 Modes of operation
    • Manual mode
    • Automatic mode
    • Automatic Delayed mode
  • Supported types of ATIS messages (Annex 11):
    • one broadcast serving arriving aircraft; or
    • one broadcast serving departing aircraft; or
    • one broadcast serving both arriving and departing aircraft; or
    • two broadcasts serving arriving and departing aircraft respectively at those aerodromes where the length of a broadcast serving both arriving and departing aircraft would be excessively long
  • Text-to-speech conversion
  • Multiple broadcast channels
  • Time synchronization
  • Automatic meteorological input:
    • MET REPORT/SPECIAL
    • METAR/SPECI
  • Runway surface conditions: The product supports the global reporting format for assessing and reporting runway surface conditions
  • External interface protocols: ATIS supports both serial and TCP/IP connections
    • AFTN – ITA2 and IA5 format
    • AMHS – X.400 P3
    • AWOS (Requires ICD from AWOS supplier)
    • ATIS supports both digital and analogue outputs:
    • ED-137/1B and ED-137/1C (VoIP interface)
    • RTP (VoIP interface)
    • Analogue audio with PTT (ACAMS Analogue Switchover Unit (ASU) or 600 Ohm audio interface)
  • Automatic validation of incoming messages
  • Automatic Validation of operator input
  • Support for the addition of non-standard weather codes and national report rules
  • Quick display of runway configuration
  • Templates for Other Essential Information (Attention)
  • Templates for Other Pertinent Information (Warning)
  • System status monitoring
  • Comprehensive SNMP interface
  • Datalogging: All transmitted and received messages are time-stamped and recorded in the system’s database. Additionally, all user actions and system changes are logged
  • Predictive writhing in meteorological code section
  • Free-text input
  • Validation and playback feature
  • Message duration calculation
  • Dictionaries: To make sure abbreviations and phonetic translations are always up to date, we have developed a comprehensive management interface to make this easy for the user
  • Selection of voices
  • Adjustable speed rate
“The ACAMS’s new i6 ATIS system will enhance the operational service at the Decimomannu Air Base. The system is operated by the RSSTA department, serving in particular the International Flight Training School. Decimomannu is also airbase for the new F-35 fighter squadron.” Leccese, CEO of Eurelettronica Icas (Italy)
